Robbins Nest Child Care Services

The holiday season has arrived, and Robbins Nest Nursery is feeling extra magical—we’ve officially transformed our space into our own little Santa’s Village!

December is such a special month, filled with celebrations of all kinds. Whether your family observes Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, or simply embraces the spirit of togetherness that this season brings, we hope your home is filled with warmth, connection, and joy. It’s also a time when emotions can run high. The holidays can be beautiful, but they can also be busy, overwhelming, or even heavy for some families. Please remember that you are never alone. If you find yourself needing support, resources, or even just a listening ear, we are always here to help however we can. Wishing you a peaceful and meaningful holiday season surrounded by the people you love most.

SAFETY FIRST

6- 12 months:

As your little one grows, their mobility and speed really starts to take off. At this stage, babies can move suddenly and unpredictably, which makes high surfaces especially unsafe. Be sure never to leave your child unattended on beds, sofas, chairs, changing tables, or any elevated spot. Infants don’t yet have depth perception and can crawl or roll right off an edge in seconds. Keeping them on the floor or a safe, supervised surface is the best way to prevent falls.

12-18 months:

Your little one is probably walking, and maybe even trying to run, which means they’re exploring nonstop and often putting toys in their mouths. To help keep them safe, try to avoid letting them move around with toys in their mouths. Choose larger, soft toys instead of long or rigid ones, which can cause injury if they trip or take a tumble.

LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT

Here are some activities suggested by the CDC Milestones app that you can do with your child this month to encourage their development:

6- 12 Months

  • Ask for behaviors that you want. For example, instead of saying “don’t stand,” say “sit down, please.”

  • Describe what your baby is looking at. For example, point to the item and say “red ball.”

  • Use words, facial expressions, and voice to show what you think your baby is feeling. For example, “You are feeling sad, let’s see how we can make you feel better.”

12-18 Months

  • Show your child different things, such as a hat. Ask them “What do you do with a hat? You put it on your head!” Demonstrate this action then give your baby the item and see if they copy you!

  • Find ways to let your child help with everyday activities. Let them help you pack snacks for the park or put socks in the basket.

  • Say what you think your child is feeling. Use your words, facial expressions, and voice to show them what you think they are feeling. For example, “I can see you are frustrated we can’t go outside. It is ok to be frustrated. We can go outside tomorrow.”

READING CORNER

Did you know children who are read to for 20 minutes a day are exposed to 1.8 million words per year?  Here are some books we are reading this month:

GENTLE SLEEP TIP

If your little one is waking frequently during the night, start by making sure they’re eating enough during the day. Hunger is one of the most common causes of overnight wakeups in infants. If you have an older child, frequent waking is often linked to behavior and consistent reinforcement of their behavior. If you know your child's needs are met, gently encourage them to stay in their bed and fall asleep with you nearby for reassurance, while still giving them the space to settle on their own.

If you feel like you need extra support helping your little one get a good night's sleep, schedule a call with Keri. There’s still plenty of time to get them sleeping soundly through the night by Christmas Eve so Santa can visit!
